Passing the baton to the next generation in the music industry
August 3, 2018. Glen Ellyn, IL/–Lisa’s Clarinet Shop, a 37-year-old boutique provider of professional quality musical instruments to professionals, college clarinet professors, and their students, military bands, high schools and universities and amateurs alike, has established a partnership with Brian Corbin Clarinet Products located in Tallahassee, Florida.
While only in her early 50’s, main street entrepreneur Lisa Canning has been helping others to grow their ideas into businesses for over 35 years. As such, being intimately involved in the ‘passing the baton to the next generation in the music industry’ is something Lisa wants to be a part of over the next 10 years. ‘Being a part-of-the-change that needs to occur in the music education ‘system’ and deepening its understanding of the need to encourage students to enter the music industry is important to me’, said Ms. Canning.
As a veteran in the music products business, having started her business from her college dorm room at Northwestern University, Canning has helped countless startups’ and small business owners over the years grow and succeed in the music industry. Recognized for over a decade as a Top 200 retailer in the USA, Canning downsized her business from a large mail-order business that catered to professional musicians, into a specialty professional woodwind shop just a little over 10 years ago.
‘I started my business at the age of 17 and Brian was one of my customers. This industry needs more people in it like Brian who are passionate about the business side of the music industry, who are outstanding musicians, and who want to be respected and lead in their communities. Music changes lives and the products side of the industry inspires, educates and ensures that it will.’
‘I could not be more happy to be working with Austin McFarland, Lisa Canning and Yuan Gao to continue to build customer success stories for this industry’, stated Brian Corbin. ‘For music to thrive we need to learn more skills and build more knowledge about our craft. I have been doing that with Brian Corbin Clarinet Products and realizing financial and professional success right out of school. Lisa’s Clarinet Shop has always been committed to helping others achieve career success too so I am super excited to be a part of advancing its mission and work,’ stated Brian Corbin.
‘I too could not be more proud to be a part of this journey. I have learned a lot from Lisa and equally have learned how valuable the marketing skills I innately have- my gifts- are to building this business,’ stated Director of Marketing for Lisa’s Clarinet Shop, Austin McFarland.
Brian Corbin began repairing clarinet as a service to his students and colleagues during his time as a music education major at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at The Florida State University, he continued to fill the needs of the clarinet community by developing and customizing products for clients, in addition to repair services.
Brian Corbin Clarinet Products was created as a way for Brian to share his passion for connecting with people and helping them find their own voice. In addition to these services, Brian is also an active performer, educator, and clinician.
Austin McFarland is the Director of Marketing for Lisa’s Clarinet Shop and Royal Musical Instruments, as well as Co-Founder of Clarinet Consultant. He and Brian have agreed to work together to continue the tradition of excellence Lisa’s Clarinet Shop was founded on.
As a musicpreneur, Austin feels advancing as a performer to be a critical component to his career success. As such, he is attending the University of Arkansas in pursuit of a dual master’s in music performance in clarinet and saxophone. As an avid doubler he has commissioned several works for clarinet and saxophone with one player, the latest of which will be world premiered at the American Single Reed Summit in October 2018.
